Well-known for using her strong voice in service of others, Karla is a champion for members of her community. She is a collaborator, a listener, and a tireless doer.
Karla regularly lends her hand to the critical work being done by a large number of local organizations. Former Co-Chair of the St. John’s Status of Women Council, and Member of MentorSquad at the Genesis Centre Incubator program, she is currently the Co-Chair of Equal Voice Newfoundland and Labrador.
Karla also created two initiatives of her own, Mighty Girls Day and Project Grow. Mighty Girls Day brought girls aged 9 to 11 together with a parent to spend a day learning about topics from math to art, music to emotions. At the height of the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, Karla created Project Grow, which put 500 container gardens into the hands of people who utilize local community centres so that they could experience the physical and mental benefits of growing food at home.
Karla’s professional background is as an astute strategist and leader. She spent 14 years at m5 Agency, the largest communications firm in Eastern Canada. That work brought her into boardrooms throughout Canada and the US for virtually every major industry and all levels of government. From tourism to technology, energy production to environmental stewardship, retail sales to mental health, Karla has sat at the table and collaborated with them all. After m5 Agency, Karla held Director level positions at MAX Arts. Athletics. Wellness and Destination St. John’s.
